Shimano Inc is a Japanese multinational company which was founded in February of 1921 and specilises in manufacturing cycling components, fishing tackle and snowboarding equipment.
Shimano globally leads the way when it comes to innovation and distribution of bicycle components, commanding approximately 50% of the market share. Within the Shimano range of products are riding shoes, wheels, brake systems, drivetrain components, pedals and sunglasses, all of which cater for road, mountain, and hybrid bikes. Generally speaking these bicycle components come together to make a group set, which consists of all the working mechanical parts of a bike.
Components within a group set vary, depending on the style of bicycle, however most bikes include the following: crank set (comprising cranks and chainrings), bottom bracket, chain, cassette/freewheel, front and rear wheel hubs, gear shift levers, brakes, brake levers, derailleur/brake cables, front and rear gear derailleurs.
Shimano group sets for road bikes are:
- Dura ace Di2 (7970) 10 speed electronic
- Dura Ace (7900)
- Dura Ace Track (7700)
- Ultegra (6700)
- 105 (5700)
- Tiagra (3500)
- Sora (3400)
- 2200 (2300)
At the top of the Shimano group set range are Dura Ace group sets. The advantage Dura Ace group sets have over additional group sets is weight and responsiveness under pressure. Shimano Dura Ace is designed using the lightest and structurally integral materials possible. This not only keeps the overall weight of the bike to a minimum but also means the group set components will perform under high amounts of pressure and torque.
Shimano group sets for mountain bikes are:
- Cross Country Sets- XTR (M970) 9 speed, Deore XT (M770) 9 and 10 speed, SLX (M660) 9 and 10 speed and Deore (M590) 9 Speed.
- Downhill/Freeride Sets- Saint (M810) 9 speed
- Trekking Set- Deore XT, Deore LX and Deore.
- Recreational Sets- Alivio (M410 & M430) 8 and 9 speed, Acera (M360) 8 speed, Altus (M310) 8 speed, Tourney 6 and 7 speed.
Top of the range Shimano group sets for mountain bikes is XTR. This is a light weight and highly durable group set for cross country riding. As with the Shimano Dura Ace group set, the Shimano XTR group set is designed with the same principles in mind, high performance components which keep overall weight to a minimum and will be responsive and reliable under high amounts of pressure. This is what a Shimano XTR group set deliver.
Shimano also offers a range of wheel sets for road, mountain and recreational use.
