SRAM Crank

SRAM Corporation is a privately held bicycle component manufacturer based in Chicago Illinois, founded in 1987. The name of the company, SRAM, is an acronym of the names of its founders, Scott, Ray, and Sam.

The SRAM company was the inventor of the Grip Shift (or twist shift) gear-change method which was introduced into the mountain bike market in 1988. This innovation was received very well and over subsequent years SRAM went on to incorporate several mountain bike component manufactures which resulted in SRAM becoming one of the global leaders in the hugely competitive bicycle component market. The companies which were incorporated by SRAM include, Rockshox, Avid, Truativ and Zipp.

As well as the grip shift SRAM also introduced the “Double Tap” gear changing system to the road bike market which was a huge success for them and helped to cement their place within the lucrative components market.

The Double Tap shifting system allows the rider to change gears with the use of just one lever. With a half press of the lever the gears change down and with a full press of the lever the gears change up. This differs from Shimano and Campagnolo who both use two levers for respective gear shifting.

SRAM currently have 4 road bike group sets (in descending order of price/quality):
