Wetsuits, in regards to cycling refer to triathlon wetsuits. These wetsuits have a very smooth, but often fragile, surface making them specific to open water swimming. This slick surface helps to reduce water friction and in turn allows a faster swim. Another advantage is the added buoyancy which provides a triathlete with a considerable advantage over not wearing a wetsuit. Rules vary by event, but typically wetsuits are allowed only if the water temperature is below a specified threshold on the day of the event (e.g. 26°C, 78 °F).
