In the best-of-three race series, the gold medal went to Great Britain's triple world sprint champion Victoria Pendleton handing the Silver medal to Meares in a 2-0 victory. But for all those who watched on as Meare's made an incredible effort before a sold out and vocal crowd at the Laoshan velodrome, it was irrelevent what color medal she took home, more so the display of courage and heart that Meares showed to be at beijing. After a nearly tragic end to her cycling career early this year, it is remarkable the 24 year-old from Queensland made it to the games at all, let alone win a medal. Meares was lucky to escape paralysis in a high-speed fall at the Los Angeles World Cup, and was left wheel-chair bound. Anna couldn't believe her fortune last night and gave a teary and emotion filled thank you to her family and friends, "My family, my sponsors and my team-mates - I was pretty impressed for a bunch of boys, they turned up the first day I got home with flowers and chocolates. I can't tell you how much positive energy has been surrounding me these seven months and it's rubbed off". Congratulations Anna Meares!
