The first thing you notice about Dan McConnell is he’s such a nice guy.
A down-to-Earth country lad, Dan is part of the Trek Factory Racing team. The reason Dan is causing a stir at this year’s Santos Tour Down Under is not due to lack of palmarès. Last year he clocked an Australian National Championship, four podium finishes, two sixth places and finished every round at the World Cup inside the top ten. He’s a two-time Olympian, and a 2013 World Cup Champion and Oceania Champion.
What makes Dan stand out from the pack is he’s a champion mountain biker (his normal day job is with Trek Factory Racing’s XC mountain biking team). And if you listen to the punters, he has every chance of upsetting the apple cart on what’s largely considered the race decider –
BikeExchange Stage 5’s hurt-fest Willunga Hill.
We caught up with Dan ahead of the Santos Tour Down Under to find out what he thinks his chances are, what it’s like making the leap from dirt to road and back, and just how good a knitter he really is…
