Journalist on Wheels

Channel Seven journalist Helen Kapalos is a well-recognised face in Australian media. Yet many would not realise she is also a big fan of riding, and has been for most of her life. Helen prefers commuting to and from work on two wheels rather than four.

I grew up in…
Newcastle, and loved riding my bike everywhere. I was always the kid at home who ran ‘errands’ because I loved my cute little purple bike. I was very excited when I finally got a real bike in the form of an Apollo deluxe. We were extremely fortunate to have the Hadley bike store in Newcastle, which was owned by a well established cycling family who just fuelled our passion for bikes.

I am reading…
Leigh Matthews biography, and loving it. I love a good biography and that man is a total champion!

People tell me I am…
Always on the go…. My sister says I thrive on being busy, which is probably true. So if you hear me complaining about how ‘busy’ I am, please remind me I thrive on it!

My life is linked to the cycling world because…
I believe we see the world differently on a bike - it represents freedom for me.

My favourite cycling story to tell around the dinner table is…
Always joke about one particular accident where I lost a lot of skin. It took place on a bike track near Elwood. I joked it was a witches hat convention gone wrong. I was trying to avoid the witches hats, and instead slipped right into the middle of trouble. Needless to say I hobbled home.

A typical working day for me involves…
Scanning papers first thing to keep up to speed on issues. The wonderful thing about Sunday Night is we cover everything and anything, and we’re involved in the pitching of story ideas right through to the storytelling process. But there’s no such thing as a typical day. I could be researching, shooting the interviews or in the edit suite. Stories can take up to a month and are extremely investigative in nature. It’s very fulfilling.

When I get spare time, I…
Try and source new music, books and do relaxing things like yoga, and of course ride the bike. My favourite thing is to look at where I live in an adventurous way… Like I am seeing it for the first time. You’ll be amazed at how many new things you can discover this way.

Over time, my list of injuries now includes…
Fractured ribs, hip injury, multiple grazes and bruises… all worth it!

If I could ride anywhere tomorrow, I'd go… / Because…
I love the Yarra trail, I never get sick of it. There are so many highlights including the Fairfield boathouse and Dights Falls

If I could go out for a ride with anyone, it would be… / Because…
I’d ride with all the girls from Giant Bikes - they are some of the most safety conscious riders I have ever been around and they have your back. I’d ride back to the Yarra Valley with them - a trail we have done before – it’s so picturesque
