New 2020 Cannondale CAAD13 Road Bike – Seven Things to Know

Less than a month after unveiling it’s overhauled SuperSix EVO, American aluminium experts Cannondale have announced the latest iteration of its venerable aluminium road bike, the CAAD13. Sharing the same geometry and frame shape as its carbon-framed sibling, as well as a host of upgrades over its predecessors, join us as we take you through seven things to know about the lighter, faster, and smoother Cannondale CAAD13.

The Aluminati, Evolved

Standing for Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design, the CAAD series of road bikes from Cannondale has attracted a cult following since its introduction to the pro peloton in the ’90s. For 2020, the CAAD13 makes use of an all-new 6069 aluminium frame that Cannondale dubs C1 smart aluminium. This new frame is said to improve on the strengths of its predecessors, a series that has long been regarded as one of the best value road bikes on the market.

Aero Tweaks and Stiffness Gains

The CAAD13 follows the SuperSix EVO’s lead in incorporating truncated airfoil frame tube shapes. These new frame shapes are said to reduce aerodynamic drag by up to 30% compared to the traditional rounded tubing found on its predecessors. Additionally, the new frame shape is said to weigh precisely the same as the outgoing CAAD12 (Rim: 1098g, Disc: 1094g Size 56) while also increasing overall stiffness.

Smoother

While it’s claimed to be stiffer, Cannondale claims the CAAD13 is also more complaint that ever. This is largely thanks to the dropped chainstays on the tweaked frame design, an all-new KNØT seatpost and an updated full carbon fork. The KNØT seatpost is said to provide more bump-absorbing compliance than the previous generation SAVE seatpost, while the full carbon fork makes use of Cannondale’s own BallisTec carbon fibre which is claimed to reduce vibrations and increase comfort.

Geometry Tweaks

Looking at the geometry charts, and as was the case with its predecessor, the CAAD13 mirrors the fit of the new generation SuperSix EVO. This is means that the fit is slightly more relaxed than the CAAD12, with somewhat higher stack and shorter reach figures. So while the traditional horizontal top tube and classic silhouette are a thing of the past, the new frame shape aids in the overall ride quality offered, which is a decent trade-off as far as we’re concerned.

Disc or Rim

While some traditionalist will cringe at the move to a sloping top tube, the fact that rim-brakes are still offered will at least appease those against the disc brake movement. For disc-equipped models, the CAAD13 now scores proper thru-axles, which by design are a significant improvement over the quick release levers used on its predecessor. Rim brake models also move to a direct-mount calliper, which offers room for wider rubber (more on that below), increased braking performance and modulation.

Space for Wide Rubber

Tyre clearance has been increased across the board, with disc-equipped models now said to handle tyres up to 30mm wide, while rim brake models will confidently swallow rubber 28mm wide. This brings it on par with much of its carbon-framed road bike competition. Additionally, both rim and disc-equipped models now feature dedicated fender mounts too, sure to be appreciated by those using the bike in wetter climates.
