Australia's Hottest Bike Shops - Velo Bicycles

Velo Bicycles are the specialists in high end carbon road bikes. To back up this statement, the day I was there, six Time frames had just arrived from France, ready to be built for some pretty excited customers.

Brant and his team focus on elite road bikes and brands, Colnago and Time two of their biggest sellers. Shop owner Brant describes a lot of what they do as 'Halo bike builds'. Those bikes you dream about owning, that bring a tear to your eye as well as a smile to your face. There have been countless 'OMG' moments over the years, one such customer was so overjoyed with his dream bike, he literally shed a tear.

The team enjoy having the opportunity to spend the extra time with the customer, and build a bike and experience that is truly unique to them. From walking around the shop it is clear they have great attention to detail, which could be described as an old school approach, or simply, great customer service.

Velo Bicycles have just done a major shop fit out which showcases their exclusive line-up with custom build Colnago and Time machines scattered around the store. The shop looks like a showroom, impeccably clean and well presented with hardwood floors.

The focus is well and truly on keeping the customers happy and giving them a unique experience, along with a magnificent new bike. They offer same day servicing and there is a wealth of experience in the workshop. Mitch has been wrenching in the bicycle industry for 10 years and Kristian started working as a mechanic 30 years ago, so you can be comfortable in the knowledge that your bike is in the best possible hands.

The workshop is spotless, which is always a sign of a good mechanic and a smooth operation. Velo offers three service levels, the Sprinter, the Domestique and the Over Hauler where they basically take your bike apart and completely re-build it.

Velo have also just become the sole provider of Jaggad cycling gear for Queensland. The Australian brand is making a big impact on the cycling world with unique and creative designs, paired with performance features and some serious street cred. No doubt their new season kit would go nicely with a brand new C60 or a Time Skylon Aktiv.

Specialising in 'Dream builds' rather than out of the box or off the shelf bikes, the team will tick off approximately 10-12 custom builds every month. That number continues to grow as does the extravagance of the requests. It's almost common place for Velo to include top of the line Campagnolo Super Record EPS groupsets on their builds as more and more people are creating their dream bikes.

Once you have collected your bike, the service doesn't end there. Brant and the boys offer lifetime usage of their 'Dialled in Motion' bike fit system to ensure as you change, your bike changes with you. In addition to the fit, they aim to help riders with their technique and form on the bike, not cutting any corners in the process and happily spending a couple of hours getting everything right and ensuring the customer leaves satisfied.

If you have some time check our their gallery of bike builds, it is an endless line of dream bikes that will have you salivating. Two stand outs for me were the BMC TMR01 custom painted frame with Shimano Dura Ace 9000 Series Di2, TIME Handlebars & Stem custom painted & Lightweight Fernweg Clinchers and the fresh Colnago C60 with Dura Ace Di2 Groupset, Mavic Ksyrium SLE Wheelset and 3T Stealth Carbon ErgoNova Bars.

But the highlight was seeing an old school Colnago that was built to actual generational specifications following a request from one of Velo's clients. The vintage orange and blue frame is capped off with decades old Campagnolo groupset, complete with shifters on the down tube, cages on the pedals and a leather seat. It almost looks too good to ride.

The team at Velo are all riders and have a passion for everything to do with bikes. A couple of the staff are regulars on the Queensland racing scene and all enjoy a spin and a brew. The message from Brant and his team, is that the relationship is not over the day the customer walks out the store, that's just the beginning .
