Riding Wollongong & Illawarra - All You Need to Know

Whether you are new to the area, or just visiting, it can be hard sometimes to work out where to ride, where to get a decent coffee and when and where the bunches take off from each morning. We've got our finger on the pulse here at BikeExchange so you can get involved straight away with Everything Bike around Wollongong and Illawarra!

Group rides

iBUG Illawarra Explorer Ride

Location: The ride leaves Oak Flats Railway Station and winds its way through some of the more interesting back streets and bike paths around Wollongong

Start time: 8.30 on the second Tuesday of each month

Distance: Approx. 30km

Description: Back streets and bike paths mostly

Intensity: Beginner to moderate

Women’s Rides

Location: Leaves Dapto High, Cleveland St, Dapto.

Start time: Thursdays at 10.30pm and Saturdays in July at 9am

Distance: Approx. 30km

Description: Introductory ride for those with road bikes who want to learn more about hill climbing, gears and bunch riding etiquette

Intensity: Average speed 20-23 kph

She rides group

Spearman’s Liv Friday Road Ride

Location: 301 Keira Street, Wollongong NSW, 2500

Start time: 10am Fridays

Distance: Approx. 20-30km

Description: Great ride for women who want to improve their skills: bunch riding, managing gears and hill climbing

Intensity: Lower for beginner riders

Spearman’s Liv Saturday Road Ride

Location: 301 Keira Street, Wollongong NSW, 2500

Start time: 6.30am

Distance: Approx. 30-50km

Description: For women who can comfortably ride 30-50km

Intensity: Moderate to higher level averaging 25-30kph

Diggies Daily Rides

Location: Diggies Cycle Café, 301 Keira Street, Wollongong NSW, 2500

Start time: Approx. 6.00am daily

Distance: 30-45km

Description: Fast. Rides usually head out round the Austinmer loop or out to Seacliff Bridge and back for coffee at Diggies

Intensity: Fast for competitive riders

‘Aqua’ Rides

Location: St Therese Chuch, Crown Street Wollongong

Start time: Sundays 6.30am

Distance: 30-45km

Description: Round Lake Illawara to finish up at Aqua Coffee Shop on Cliff road North Beach

Intensity: 29-30kph average, intermediate to advanced riders

ICC Club Rides

Location: Leave Unanderra Pool

Start time: Sundays in winter and Saturdays in Summer at 7am

Distance: Approx. 70km

Description: Hill climbs and hard efforts

Intensity: 29-31 kph competitive riders

Cycling Clubs

Illawarra Cycle Club

The largest road cycling club in the area, Illawarra Cycle Club is your go-to for all things racing. Located in Dapto, the cub is situated ideally for making the most of the fantastic rides throughout the Wollongong and Illawarra area.

Affiliated with Cycling NSW and Cycling Australia, the ICC works hard to develop junior riders in the area helping them grow into cycling machines.

Illawarra Cycle Club Race

Their calendar is jam packed with events from weekly racing at the nearby Unanderra Velodrome to annual road race events. If you want to challenge yourself with a bit of competition, or you just want to meet other keen cyclists, join up!

Illawarra Bicycle User Group Incorporated (iBUG)

IBUG is operated by passionate local cyclists who vary in skill level, riding styles and discipline.

Their main focus is cycling advocacy in and around Illawarra. They work closely with Wollongong and Shellharbour councils to try and improve cycling facilities and the roads and bike paths in the area.

WEA Ramblers

Bringing a bit of diversity to the clubs in the area, the Ramblers are a bunch of super keen outdoor enthusiasts who not only cycle, but explore the great outdoors in every way possible.

Run by local volunteers, the ramblers hold a huge number of events each year focusing on hiking, kayaking, camping and cycling; they get out there and do it all.

If you’re thinking about joining, you are welcome to two free activities with full insurance cover before making your mind up. We think you will want to stick around.

MTB Clubs

Wollongong Mountain Bike Club

The WMBC is truly for everyone. They cater to all ability levels and whether you are a hot shot racer or just looking at getting out on the trail, the Greenvalleys Mountain Bike Park is the perfect place to give it a go.

They play a key role in the maintenance of the bike park, helping out on a build is an awesome way to learn more about mountain biking, and you’ll get to ride the trail when you’re done.

WMBC plays host to regular social rides, club and interclub competitive events. Their downhill track is drawing the crowds and they have recently finished their cross-country track which is sure to take things to another level.

They've been going off lately with membership numbers through the roof so get on the bandwagon now before it leaves town.

Ken Dinnerville Memorial 2015 – in memory of Ken Dinnerville who was killed in 1954 while out riding

Start Point – Illawarra Christian School, Calderwood Road, Albion Park

Duration – 102 km

Intensity – Moderate to Competitive Riders

Description – Four laps turning at Illawarra Cycle Club. Varying terrain and intensity, a number of decent hill climbs
