Coming onto the circuit less than 4 months ago as the first all Australian cycling team (well, mostly Australian) the team are already paving the way into a great season with more than 10 accolades under their lycra belts. With an already impressive list of achievements so early on in the season, is there a chance that the team can have a go at donning the lucrative golden jersey that Aussie Cadel Evans had the honour of wearing after his win last year? We think so. But being the proud online sponsor of the GreenEDGE team, we may be a little biased.
The team has been formed with an elite group of all stars which is almost too large to fit on a (web)page but includes legendary Tour de France stage winner Stuart O'Grady, Australian road champ/recent San-Remo winner/current UCI World Tour Leader Simon Gerrans, recent Singapore Crit champ and Tour De France stage winner Robbie McEwan, recent Volta A Catalunya winner Michael Albasini, ex-Herald Sun tour winner Baden Cooke, the “Bridge” team (champ Jack Bobridge and Luke Durbridge), sprint star Matt Goss, and time triallist up and comer Cam Meyer... Sulzberger, Michael Hepburn, Allan Davis, the list goes on!
3 of the team are already seasoned Tour De France participants, inclusive of cycling veteran Stuart O’Grady who will surely have some tricks up his jersey sleeve after having exposure to the event since 1998.
The boys in Green will be up against some pretty tough competition, vying for the jersey will be another prominent Australian cyclist, our very own Cadel Evans, along with the Schleck brothers who will no doubt be hot on his wheels and a bevy of other riders who will be thirsty for the win. It is probably a little too early in the season to evaluate who are the top contenders, however one who will not be in attendance is Contador, who will not get to spectate the race from his saddle this year, after having his Tour De France medals stripped from him last year due to doping claims.
With an already impressive start to the season and an even greater list of experienced and talented riders, we are looking forward to seeing how our first Australian team fares up at the upcoming Tour De France 2012. This is the first time we have had a (mostly) Australian team listed in the world famous cycling event and we can’t wait to see how the results play out.
