Chappelli Glow Bike Review
Introducing Australia’s first glow-in-the-dark bicycle, the Chappelli Glow Bike. With the frame and fork painted in luminescent paint, their classic three speed now is perfectly equipped to guarantee your fellow road users not only think you are the coolest cat in town – but are also acutely aware you are on the road with them.
Charged by sunlight during the day, the Glow Bike then has the capacity to radiate light for several hours after dark.  As a rider who has spent many hours riding in the dark my primary concern has always been being seen. The more drivers that know I am there, the more reassuring it is. The Glow Bike goes a long way towards achieving that.
The Glow Bike I tested had a three speed Sturmey Archer internally geared rear hub fitted. Which given the price tag, was a pleasant surprise. Sturmy Archer is a brand who, like Chappelli Cycles, has a heritage in cycling stretching well back in to the 20th century. That Chappelli would choose them as their drivetrain preference certainly makes sense, only finding it on a commuter at this price point was not expected. I was impressed. Riding it was smooth and precise, with the three gears providing a gearing range that is enough to see you comfortably around town.
Wheels are sleek deep section 42mm rims laced to some smooth rolling, hubs – which when you are in full sunlight certainly give the Glow Bike a hip feel without being over the top. Kenda Kwest tyres are a great choice. Not only good in the dry they also have exceptional grip in the wet.
The grips were also comfortable, as was the saddle. When you test a lot of bicycles, you quickly pick saddles that are not comfortable. Especially on commuter bikes when you are commonly in jeans. This one did not cause any problems.
The Glow Bike frame itself features some neat welds, with the paint finish even and blemish free. Which you would expect given Chappelli offer a 30 day, no questions asked, free return policy. This complements the 10 year frame warranty and 1 year components warranty.
Rounding out the Glow Bike package is a free lock and helmet (worth $80) that comes with every purchase, leaving you with a bicycle of both exceptional safety and value for money. The Chappelli staff at their North Melbourne store are always available for a test ride or even just a demonstration of the bike’s glow. Certainly worth using your lunch break and dropping in for a look, looking cool, getting fit and saving money rarely comes this easy.
