When Mike Kluge set up Focus Bikes in ’92, he had already shown the world what he could do on the bike; now it was time to show them what he could do for the bike itself.
Kluge won the World Amateur Cyclo-Cross Champs in ’85 and ’87, and went on to win it professionally the same year that Focus Bikes came on to the world cycling scene.
Production began in 1993 partnering up with German manufacturing company Derby Cycle Werke (now Derby Cycle AG) in Cloppenburg.
The company’s mantra was simple, “German Engineered” – a mantra that is easy for anyone the world over to understand, German products being known for their reliability, precision and performance.
A year later in 1994, Focus Bikes rolled out its first line of mountain bikes featuring a range of six different models to choose from. Expanding in ’95, they began producing touring bikes for the growing popularity of cycle touring throughout Europe. Eight years later in ’03, Focus produced their first line of race and performance road bikes, entering a market that has enabled the company to grow rapidly ever since, developing technology to compete at the highest level. In 2006 Focus created their first carbon-fibre frameset and a year later, released their first time trial and a triathlon model.
In 2009 Focus Bikes (now owned by Derby Cylce Ag) set up subsidiary companies in the States and Italy, allowing them to further their reach into the worldwide market.
Focus is (err) focused on bikes, producing a huge range of bike models across the broad spectrum of disciplines, for all types of riders regardless of ability or age.
While they started off in the mountain biking market, they are now providing bikes to road riders, commuters, kids, cycle touring enthusiasts and have even developed their own range of cyclocross and electric powered bicycles.
Focus has also since expanded to create their own line of Focus branded cycling apparel and accessories such as bidons and bottle cages.
Focus has sponsored a number of riders and teams since the early nineties, starting with Mike Kluge in 1993, who went on to win the German national Cyclo-Cross Champs and was world runner-up riding a Focus bike. As of 2015, they sponsor the likes of the Focus XC Team on the mountain biking world circuit and Team Ag2r – La Mondiale at UCI Road Cycling Grand Tour events such as the Vuelta a Espana and the Tour de France.
