Designed for three-four year olds, a 12in bicycle is the entry point for a pedal bicycle. Most brands offer both boys 12in and girls 12in bikes. Narrow your search by filtering our extensive range of 12in kids bikes. For more information on these little bikes, see below.
Designed for young children between the heights of 85 to 100cm, 12inch kids bikes are the smallest pedal bike commonly available. Children of this age are quickly developing and so feeling comfortable and confident is crucial to their riding enjoyment and safety.
At BikeExchange we believe that children of this age are best served by a balance bike, but if you’re set on pedals for your young one then a 12in or 14in kids bike is it.
Department stores will occasionally refer to 12in kids bikes as '30cm kids bikes'. This is an approximate metric conversion.
Not too dissimilar to toys, kids bikes are commonly sold in gender-specific options. Cheaper options will feature a steel frame, while more premium models offer aluminium which is typically far lighter and resistant to rust.
Boys 12in bikes are typically supplied with trainer wheels and a rear coaster brake. Some brands do supply a lever-operated front brake, although this feature is more commonly kept for the larger 16in wheeled bikes as it’s assumed kids of this age don’t have the hand strength or coordination to operate such a thing.
Where a uni-sex bike is desired, look to the boys versions for more neutral colour choices.
Typically just a different colour to the equivalent boys versions, girls 12in bikes generally feature pinks, purple and white. Girls bikes will often add a few additional accessories, such a streamers and even doll baskets.
Where such accessories are not included, they are available for purchase at most bicycle shops.
