650 Kids Bike Features

Kids road bikes offer a more performance orientated bicycle option, perfect for a beginner road racer or confident child that now has a riding ability beyond that available from a standard kids bike. Generally, this is most suitable for kids between the age of 8 and 12. There are several features of kids’ road bikes that distinguish them from earlier childhood models.

Wheel Size

Perhaps the most important feature of a 650C road bike is wheel size. As the title suggests, these models embrace a wheel diameter of 650mm, it’s close to the standard road bike wheel diameter of 700mm but allows for a smaller frame and overall smaller bike. In combination with thinner tyres, this provides a significant improvement in rolling resistance and provides more dynamic control.

Drop bars

It is common for 650C road bikes to feature drop handlebars. Drop bars provide a more race specific setup that is primarily for enhanced gear shifting and braking capabilities. This is often the first time most children will encounter this type of handlebar setup, and why it may not feel as ‘relaxed’ or upright at first, drop bars will eventually enable better bicycle control and performance when ridden at speed on the road.

Other features

Generally, kids road bikes utilize compact alloy frames for a light, yet durable setup. They also feature two front chainrings that commonly combine to create at least a 14-speed drivetrain, enabling a greater range of gear flexibility out on the road. As a bike fully-featured with adult components, just in smaller proportions, 650C road bikes most importantly create a safe and efficient bicycle option for your child.
