Mountain Bike Tubes

Mountain bike tubes are inflatable rubber parts inside your tyre and hold the air pressure. They are essential for providing a smooth and comfortable ride on rough terrain.

But how do you choose the best mountain bike tubes for your needs? There are many factors to consider, such as size, material, valve type, weight and puncture resistance.

  • Size: Mountain bike tubes come in different sizes to fit different wheel diameters and tyre widths. The most common sizes are 26", 27.5" (also known as 650b) and 29". You can find the size of your tube on the sidewall of your tyre or on the packaging of your tube. Make sure you get the right size for your wheel and tyre combination.

  • Material: Mountain bike tubes are made of either butyl or latex. Butyl is thicker, heavier and more affordable than latex. It also holds air pressure better and is more resistant to punctures. Latex is thinner, lighter and more expensive than butyl. It also offers a smoother ride quality and better rolling resistance, but it loses air pressure faster and is more prone to punctures.

  • Valve type: Mountain bike tubes have either Presta or Schrader valves. Presta valves are narrower and longer and have a locking nut that secures them to the rim. They require a special pump head or an adapter to inflate them. Schrader valves are wider and shorter and have a spring-loaded pin that opens when pressed by a pump head. They are compatible with most pumps and can be inflated at gas stations.

  • Weight: The weight of your mountain bike tube affects your overall bike performance and handling. Lighter tubes reduce rotational weight and improve acceleration and climbing efficiency. Heavier tubes add stability and durability but increase rolling resistance and drag.

  • Puncture resistance: Puncture resistance is the ability of your mountain bike tube to withstand sharp objects that can cause flats. Some tubes have thicker walls or extra layers of rubber that protect them from punctures. Some tubes also have sealant inside them that plugs small holes automatically when they occur.
